Meet the Skaters of CCRD: Part 3!!

I'm pretty sure, this time last year, we were skating outside in short sleeves and shorts!!  Instead, we are still wearing scarves and, WTF, gloves to practice!
But whatever, it is what it is...we had another guest coach, so we don't care about much else on practice nights!
Flying King of the Boston Derby Dames came out to our humble abode to teach us a few tricks with hockey stops and smoother crossovers.  I had to miss most of the practice because I was buying a new car....I love derby, but I was okay with my change of plans for that evening.
Flying King giving some hot skating tips.
Mandatory group photo.
And now... for a couple more CCRD introductions!

RENEE!!
1. name//derby name & number// what position you'd like to play (if you know or have a preference yet):
My Hammy Vice (from my obsession with pigs and my husband being a police officer)
373 (The Harwich PD's radio call number)
Blocker is probably my position of choice!
2. how did you hear about ccrd...and when did you get involved:
I heard about CCRD through Boom Boom Kitty, who I work with.  I attended my first "Open  Skate" in the summer of 2013.
3. your favorite part of derby (why you keep coming back):
Besides the actual skating, it would be the constant learning, the pushing yourself to do things you never thought you could and the sisterhood of it all.
4. have you skated before//when was the last time you skated (before ccrd, of course):
I got my first set of skates, for my birthday, when I was 9.  I laugh when I think of how I used to skate around on the sidewalks, no     protective gear whatsoever but also no fear of killing myself either! We also used to skate every weekend at Riverdale Roller World or     Silver City Skateland.  The last time I skated was probably @ 18 years old (1988).
5. family life//day job...kids? profession? pets? that sort of thing...
I have been married for almost 14 years.  No 2-leggeds, but plenty of 4-legged children.  A black Lab, Tide, a micro-mini pig, Melvin,     and two cats, Scarab and Kara.  I have been a Certified Veterinary Technician for almost 20 years and am currently the Practice Manager     at the Animal Hospital of Orleans.
6. tell us something interesting/amusing/odd/unexpected about yourself...OR, what's your favorite book/color/breed of horse/flavor of ice cream...OR, your ultimate goal as a roller derby player...
Besides owning a pig and running HIS Facebook page? I am currently a team member of CAP (Companion Animal Program) with Tide.  We go to local nursing homes/adult day care units once a month for visitations.  I am currently working on getting Melvin certified to do this    also.  I do a Dog Bite Prevention seminar at the local schools with both Tide and Melvin (when the school allows pets).  Halloween is my favorite holiday, LOVE every aspect of it, decorating, FX make-up, scaring people!  I am also a huge Patriots fan, not a fair-weather one either! My ultimate goal as a roller derby player is to continue to evolve as a player and be part of CCRD long after I can physically play!
My Hammy Vice combining two of her loves: Derby and Halloween!

I was a figure skater when I was younger but had never roller skated.

Meet some CCRD skaters: PART TWO!

Who's ready for Round Two of "Let's meet the skaters of Cape Cod Roller Derby"??
I know I am!
I've been skating with a lot of these fine ladies since our very first strides on the basketball courts, at the parks.  I met many more through our open skate nights, once we were at our indoor summer home at the Hyannis Youth & Community Center.  And, there are a few that I've just recently had the pleasure of meeting.  Yet, through this little project of 'getting to know them', I'm finding out even more!
So, let's get to it, then!!

RAYA...
She's a member of our Advisory Board, and she was also part of our original Training Committee...this girl knows things!
Mini D. Molish and her adorable puppy, Gunner!
Tell us your derby name, number, and what position you play or would like to play.
Mini D. Molish #13. I will most likely be a jammer, but I really enjoy blocking

How did you find out about CCRD...when did you join?
Talia. I have known her since I was about 7. I went into the health food store where she was working (and where I used to work) on 2/14, the day they got all this started. I thought it was the stupidest thing I had ever heard of, until I went home and started googling and youtubing roller derby. I was hooked. I have been there since day one.

What is your favorite thing about derby? (What keeps you coming back?)
The challenge. I love the fact that I can push myself as hard as I do and see the progression. I love how it pushes me to be healthier. It also really helps with my built up aggression.

Have you skated before...when was the last time you skated (before CCRD, of course)?
Last I had roller bladed when i was about 8.  Then I fell really hard and never did it again. I had never put quads on until derby.

Time to get personal!  Family life...day job...kids...pets...that sort of thing...
I am newly married (my one year is this June) and no kids yet (it's in my derby contract that I can't get pregnant until after our first bout). We have a ferret- Rosa and a 5 month old German Shepherd- Gunnar. We rent a cottage on a 12 acre farm in Harwich. My day job- I am the service writer at Ryder's Cove Boatyard.

Tell us something interesting/amusing/odd/unexpected about yourself...OR, what's you favorite color/book/breed of horse/flavor of ice cream...OR, your ultimate goal as a roller derby player....
I have been surfing for about 15 years, but have mostly stopped since I started derby. I credit my derby talent to the fact that I have surfed for so long. I don't have a bathroom, my shower is in my kitchen and I have an outhouse. I was kicked off my high school basketball team for throwing my mouth guard at a ref (ooops!). I love being in the woods, I think it is probably one of my favorite places to be, besides being on the track of course.

Jennifer...
(well, one of four)
Dussault n'Battery...almost always in fishnets!
Tell us your derby name and number, and if there is a specific position you play or would like to play.
My derby name was thought up by Hartless, and since it is so awesome (aww, thanks, Jen ;) ), it has stuck with me: Dussault n'Battery. My number is 007, because, well, James Bond. Ideally I will be blocking, but somewhere in the recesses of my mind I am graceful and agile enough on skates to successfully jam one day.

How did you hear about CCRD...when did you get involved in the league?
I found out about CCRD from Talia, in March 2013. I shopped at the D-Port Natural Market where she stalked me. I remember the conversation because I mentioned belly dancing, which I was doing at the time. She asked if I knew Kristy from class, which I did, and the next words out of Talia's mouth were, "what do you think of roller derby? would you be interested in joining us?" Apparently she stalked me for a while and didn't know how to bring it up since she didn't really know me!

What's your favorite thing about derby...what keeps you coming back for more?
My favorite thing is the support system. This is an amazing group of women. I've always been more of an observer, a bit of a wall flower. It sounds so corny, but I feel like this has given me more confidence to allow myself to be myself. My other favorite thing is how much I have started to listen to my body, and really push myself to become stronger, and stretch boundaries to try new things. In derby we fall a lot, and that really has helped me view the world through that filter. I can fail at something, but it is not the end of the world, as long as I get up and try again.

Had you skated before? When was the last time you skated (before ccrd, of course)?
Which leads into this question, where I think I roller skated twice when I was maybe 8 or 9, and totally sucked at it. I could barely stand up and roll forward, so I gave it up. I was so envious of the kids who made it look so easy. I'd always wanted to be able to spin around and skate backwards. Now I can! And I can do it while getting pushed and hip checked!

Tell us about your family life and day job...kids? profession? pets? that sort of thing...
I have been married to my wonderful husband for 5 years, and we met 14 years ago this year. We have 2 wonderful adopted dogs: Chevy the Weimaraner mix, and Boone the Rhodesian Ridgeback. My day job: I am a massage therapist, and own my own my practice, Sacred Waves Myofascial Release, where I practice John Barnes Myofascial Release and Upledger Craniosacral Therapy. I am such a work nerd, and my idea of a vacation is not sitting on a beach, but taking bodywork seminars. I think the physicality of derby is a great balance because in my work life I have to be so focused and still.

Now for the fun stuff! Tell us something interesting/amusing/odd/unexpected about yourself...OR, what's your favorite book/color/breed of horse/flavor of ice cream...OR, your ultimate goal as a roller derby player...
I have a Bachelor's degree in Equine Business Management from Johnson & Wales University in RI. That means I can run a fancy horse farm. I spent my internship and the following year training thoroughbred racehorses in Ocala, FL. I have not ridden in about 5 years, which is odd since it is my greatest love. After derby, of course . Maybe I will take it up again someday. Derby has given me the confidence to unapologetically enjoy myself. I love knitting, and my favorite book is the Hobbit. My favorite movie is either Airplane! or Anchorman. I have studied shamanic healing with Healing the Light Body School, and I do incorporate that energy work into my work practice.

Are you intrigued by the awesomeness of roller derby?  Do you know a roller girl who has changed her outlook on life simply because of the benefits of this sport?  This is no joke!  These girls were amazing before, but they are simply the most inspirational women I have ever met.  Having been there from the start, I have had the unique opportunity to see how women change after roller derby.  Not just physically, but mentally...emotionally.  And, now you are getting to see it, too, with these little glimpses into the lives of these derby girls that I have the honor of calling my friends!
There's more to come! Don't you worry!!  But I'll let you take it all in, before adding more ...stay tuned!

Just another night at the dollhouse.

This is happening....

Meet some CCRD skaters! Part 1

So, you've been following along for a year or so.  You know some Cape Cod Roller Derby Dolls, personally.  Or, maybe you've just heard of our existence?  You happened into our fundraiser at Cape Cod Beer and you were immediately interested in what we're all about.  Either way, I'm willing to bet you are wondering what kind of women are out here, skating for Cape Cod.

Well, we've just had a few ladies added to our ranks; and, with our next clinic starting soon, we could potentially add even more.  Our family is growing!  And, I would love for all of you to get to know all of us.

My next few posts will be filled with tiny bios of our skaters.
 Just for fun!
I'm gonna start at the beginning with this one.
Our fearless leaders...the ladies who started this craziness.
And, myself, because...well, it's my blog!

Talya Mama and Lulu Nori Morse, Co-founders, Cape Cod Roller Derby League

First off: Co-founder, Lynne.
1.Tell us your derby name and number, and if there is a specific position you play or would like to play.
I changed my name again so it's Lulu Nori Morse number 58 still deciding on position.
2.How did you hear about CCRD...when did you get involved in the league?
I got involved when I decided I wanted to start a league on the cape
3.What's your favorite thing about derby...what keeps you coming back for more?
My favorite part of derby is roller skating. I love to be on skates! As a kids I spent hours, every day, roller skating. I also love the people.
4.Had you skated before?  When was the last time you skated (before ccrd, of course)?
I skated as a kid, age 4-12, and every once in a while at skate town USA in Whitman
5. Tell us about your family life and day job...kids? profession? pets? that sort of thing...
1 year old twins Lucca and Lyla. I'm a wedding coordinator for the historical society of old Yarmouth's Kelley chapel and the Yarmouth Port new church preservation foundation. I'm a photographer, and I run a roller derby league. I have 2 dogs that are like 2 other kids: a long haired chihuahua, named Luna, and a lovely black mut,t named Cotti.
6. Now for the fun stuff!  Tell us something interesting/amusing/odd/unexpected about yourself...OR, what's your favorite book/color/breed of horse/flavor of ice cream...OR, your ultimate goal as a roller derby player...
I'm not very interesting. I had a small organic farm and farm stand until I got pregnant but plan to start that sucker up again by popular demand. I started a roller derby league that's interesting. I haven't eaten an animal in 17 years. I spent my youth going to hardcore and punk show. My husband was a professional cyclist. My first stitches were from falling, dropping into a pool on a bmx bike in Florida (the last time I sat on a bmx bike). I also chopped my front tooth. The next time I got stitches, was cutting sunflowers at cape cod organic farm... I've been a graphic designer, loan coordinator, fire extinguisher calibration tester, Barista, docent manager, water analyst, office manager at a flower shop and bike shop, a florist... I could go on and on...
(Well, that all sounds pretty interesting to me!)

Talya Mama & Lulu Nori Morse with Dassault & Battery, Jenerally Hartless, and Riley...and that may be Steph Woz's forehead.

Next up...Talia! The other Co-founder of our derby world.
1.Tell us your derby name and number, and if there is a specific position you play or would like to play.
Talya Mama 1979
2.How did you hear about CCRD...when did you get involved in the league?
I created/ co founded CCRD with Lulu Nori Morse. This is our baby. Our very large baby.
3.What's your favorite thing about derby...what keeps you coming back for more?
My favorite part is seeing people transform and have fun. I love the friendships, the challenges and the ride.
4.Had you skated before?  When was the last time you skated (before ccrd, of course)?
Last time I skated on quads was probably 1989.. I use to rollerblade all the time. I thought skating would come easy because of that, I was wrong.
5. Tell us about your family life and day job...kids? profession? pets? that sort of thing...
I have an amazingly supportive husband, Bobby. My kids are Riley, 12.. Nova, 2. They love the derbs. When I'm not co-building the league, I'm waitressing, cleaning houses, or practicing Reiki. AND when I'm not doing that, I'm usually just being crazy with my kids.
6. Now for the fun stuff!  Tell us something interesting/amusing/odd/unexpected about yourself...OR, what's your favorite book/color/breed of horse/flavor of ice cream...OR, your ultimate goal as a roller derby player...
so, i like to play the drums and sing. i love to laugh and make people laugh. i enjoy good beer, good juice and good people. one thing i am looking forward to in my derby career is seeing our first team scrimmage. to see all this work, determination and passion come to life.
(I think we are all looking forward to that!)

Me, Jenerally Hartless...before I got addicted to bleaching and coloring my hair.

1. name//derby name & number// what position you'd like to play (if you know or have a preference yet)
Jenerally Hartless (though, I considered changing to 'Crazy Train'...everyone was against it), # 789 (because i love lame jokes)...not really sure where I'll end up, but as Head of the Training Committee, I'm really more focused on advancing the rest of the league right now.
2. how did you hear about ccrd...and when did you get involved
I knew Lynne and Talia, but I actually found out about the league being formed through another mutual friend.  I've been here since the beginning...since the very first informational meet-up.
3. your favorite part of derby (why you keep coming back)
I'm not really sure why I keep coming back!  I'm not a terribly good skater, and I get super anxious in large groups.  It must be something I really love to put myself through the emotional wringer twice a week!!  (Actually, it's a ton of fun and these girls are passionate about this sport.  Lynne and Talia put their heart & soul into this league and it shows!)
4. have you skated before//when was the last time you skated (before ccrd, of course)
I got roller skates for my 8th (9th?) birthday.  I lived on a dirt road, in a carpeted house.  I got to skate in a church parking lot during the summers I spent with my grandparents (where my aunt, who is only 4 years older than me, lived)...we skated all the time, but once I grew out of those skates, that was it.
5. family life//day job...kids? profession? pets? that sort of thing...
My boring life is shared with my husband of 13.5 years (together for nearly 19 years), and our 10(-ish) year old pug, Moxie.  We are not kid-people.  I've been a Crew Member (that means 'grunt worker') at Trader Joe's for just over 4 years.  My early morning schedule allows a lot of daylight hours to spend planning practices!!
6. tell us something interesting/amusing/odd/unexpected about yourself...OR, what's your favorite book/color/breed of horse/flavor of ice cream...OR, your ultimate goal as a roller derby player...
There is absolutely nothing interesting about me.  I love stupid old-time kid jokes.  I have had the same car for 13 years.  I also have a 1967 Plymouth Barracuda that my sister and brother are slowly (s-l-o-w-l-y) attempting to restore (it was left to my sister and me when our dad passed away)...I even took a basic automotive repair class to get comfortable with it.  Our pug is sweet and gentle.  I replaced all the insulation and drywall in our basement by myself.  I only like hugs when they are given genuinely.  I value sincerity in people, second only to common sense.  My ultimate goal with this league, and roller derby in general, is to continue to learn and progress; but, more than that, to help this league get a scrimmaging team together...and then to begin bouting!!

So that's a few of us, in a nutshell!
Next installment, you'll get to hear from a few of our other skaters!! (Just to be fair, I'll be posting them in order that they get their homework to me...so, don't get mad at me if you don't see your favorite skater!!  Tell them to get their homework done!!)
**and for fun...do you have anything you'd like to ask any of our featured skaters?  I'm not promising we'll answer them, but I'm willing to hear you out.**
(also, I apologize for the formatting...i'm crap with technology, and i'm a 'cut & paste' kinda girl.)
